Choosing the Right Driveway Edging

Why is it that some homes seem to give the distinct impression they could be featured in an architectural magazine? They may not be opulent estates, but certain finishing touches upgrade their aesthetic appeal. It starts with the driveway, the first introduction to your home. No matter how good freshly-paved or sealcoated asphalt looks, it is made better with driveway edging.

What Is Driveway Edging?

As the name suggests, driveway edging is the border along either side of your driveway. It can be installed for driveways with any type of surface material, including asphalt, concrete, stone pavers, or crushed stone. Depending on how you want your driveway to look, you have several options for edging.

  • Belgian block
  • Brick
  • Stone pavers
  • Concrete edging stones

Increase Your Driveway's Durability

Just as your driveway has a practical purpose as well as adding to your home's curb appeal, edging increases your driveway's durability.

  • Protection. The most vulnerable part of an asphalt driveway is the edge. The edges are prone to crumble when driven over or weaken due to water erosion. Edging protects your driveway, reducing the need for repairs.
  • Containment. If your driveway is crushed stone, the edging keeps it in place. For asphalt, concrete and stone pavers, edging helps to prevent mulch and other organic materials from washing over the surface during rainstorms.
  • Safety. In dim light or darkness, it can be difficult for a driver to see where to pull in and where to park. Edging that stands out from the driveway provides distinguishing guidelines.
  • Lawn Protection. Running over a lawn with a vehicle causes damage, no matter how hardy the grass. If you want to keep traffic off the grass and out of your flower beds, driveway edging can be installed as a barrier.

Flat Edging vs Raised Edging

There are two ways to go when choosing your driveway edging – raised or flat. If you don't want a difference in level between your driveway and lawn, a flat edge works best. You can add contrast by using a difference in color or materials. If you are adamant about having a highly visible border and protecting your lawn, your best choice is raised edging.
