Spring into Sealcoating! Your Driveway Will Thank You

Your driveway works hard for you. It provides a safe area for you and your family to walk and park. It reduces the amount of maintenance in your yard. It adds curb appeal to your home while increasing its value. After a long, hard winter, it deserves a spring sealcoating!

Why Sealcoat a Driveway?

Sealcoating gives your driveway a protective barrier against the elements. It fills tiny cracks in the asphalt, preventing water or corrosive chemicals from seeping through. It reduces oxidation by the sun's UV rays. Since it shields your driveway from these attacks, it decreases the risk of cracking.

Reasons to Sealcoat in the Spring

It can be expected that spring driveway repairs are necessary after the winter's harsh effects. But once the repairs are done, what is the next best thing you can do to preserve the longevity of your driveway? Sealcoat it, of course! Spring is one of the best times to sealcoat for several reasons.

  • Added Protection. If you had repairs done due to winter damage, sealcoating provides a layer of protection on the repaired spots. It's certainly not a good plan to sealcoat before the repairs.
  • Curing Conditions.  Sealcoating requires moderate weather and temperatures to set properly. It's too cold in the winter and massive precipitation is a risk. Once the temperatures are above 50 degrees during the day and above 40 degrees at night on a consistent basis, the time is right for sealcoating!

Can You Sealcoat When It Rains?

April showers bring May flowers, but can sealcoating cannot be done when it rains. Prior to the sealcoat application, the driveway must be dry, and it should not rain for at least a few hours after application. The drying process and timing will depend on many factors such as shade, clouds, wind and roughness of the driveway surface.

Plan to Sealcoat This Spring

Professionally sealcoating your driveway is recommended for protection against the deterioration that causes it to fail. Left to its own devices, your driveway will eventually become covered with cracks, pitted areas and potholes. With sufficient erosion it can collapse, becoming a safety risk.
