7 Signs That You Need a New Drainage Solution

You don't need to be an environmental scientist to recognize that water in your basement or a lake around your house after rainfall means you have a drainage problem. Some signs that water is not draining properly are obvious, but others take a trained eye to see. You will save a lot of headaches and money on home repairs by upgrading to a new drainage solution sooner rather than later.

Symptoms of Poor Drainage Around Your Home

Drainage systems are designed to move accumulating water from rain, floods, and melting snow away from your home. They can fail for any number of reasons, but these are some main red flags to look for:

  • Migrating dirt – poorly drained lawns lead to sheets of runoff when it rains. This dumps silt, mulch, and small stones where they don't belong, carving gullies through the soil.
  • Attic mildew – excess moisture in your basement eventually makes its way to the top of your house, condensing on the underside of the roof, causing mold and mildew.
  • Flaky walls – evaporating water causes efflorescence – mineral deposits that remain once the water dries up. Flaky or crusty walls are evidence of an overabundance of water.
  • Foundation cracks – harmless hairline cracks will appear as your foundation settles over time, but anything larger allows water to leak into the basement.
  • Water in your garage - if your driveway is not graded properly, water can flow directly towards your garage causing flooding and damaging the stored items.
  • Gushing downspouts – an inch of rain on a thousand square feet of roof dumps over 600 gallons of runoff. If it lands too close to the foundation, it is sent straight to your basement.
  • Overloaded gutters – if you see dirt and stains running down the walls under your gutters, it means they are not doing their job. This much overflow can damage your paint, rot the siding and cause structural damage.
