7 Signs You Need an Extended Driveway

You may not have given much thought to your driveway when you first toured and purchased your home. However, it probably very quickly became one of the most frequently-used parts of your home’s exterior. Properly maintained driveways are an important component of your property’s assets and curb appeal- but what happens when your driveway is simply too small? A driveway extension may be the answer you’ve been looking for.

Signs You Need a Driveway Extension

Driveway extensions can alleviate problems you may be having from a driveway that is too small for your family’s needs. You’re a great candidate for driveway extension if:

  • There are tire trenches or dead grass along the sides of your driveway. This happens when cars are frequently parked along the edges of your driveway to allow enough space for other vehicles to get in and out.
  • The sides or end of your driveway are cracking and crumbling. This problem also occurs when vehicles are often parked on the outer edges of the driveway, as the perimeter of the asphalt is not as strong as the center.
  • Your kids need more safe space to play. Are your children constantly asking you to move your car so they can play basketball, use sidewalk chalk, or ride their roller skates? Alleviate the need for them to require your help every time they want to play outside by providing them with more space.
  • Your children are getting their own vehicles soon. Got teenagers? If they’re looking to become more independent and get their own cars soon, you’ll need space to put them!
  • You’re always getting out of your car on the grass. If you don’t have enough room to exit your vehicle and walk on your driveway, it’s likely not large enough.
  • There are constantly cars parked along the curb in front of your house. The cars of your friends and family will be safer from potential damage of passing vehicles if they have enough room to park in your driveway as opposed to on the street.

You want to purchase a recreational vehicle. Don’t bring home an RV or boat only to realize you have no space to store it!

The Process of Extending a Driveway

Extending a driveway begins with the excavation of the proposed soil area 10” deep. This will ensure a strong base to hold your vehicles. Once the proper depth is reached, a 6” base of modified crushed stone will be layered in and compacted, followed by a 2” layer of 19mm base course asphalt. Over the base course, another 2” layer of 9.5mm finish course asphalt will be installed. Each layer is compacted with a vibratory plate or roller before installing the next. Typically, an extension added to an existing driveway will stand out due to the contrasting seam between them and the extension’s deep black color and texture. Even after sealcoating, the new asphalt will still be visible. After the extension is complete, the entire driveway can be repaved to achieve the look of a totally brand new, seamless driveway.
